The chlor-alkali process – the industrial production of chlorine and caustic soda through the electrolysis of brine – has been in use since the 19th century. The first dedicated factory was built in Germany in 1890, followed by the United States in 1893. By the 1970s, a major breakthrough arrived with the invention of ion‑exchange membranes, giving birth to the membrane electrolysis process – a direct response to growing environmental concerns over mercury pollution from older methods.
